in u.s. manufacturing. the president traveled to a suburb of detroit touring an engine plant that's announcing a $100 million expansion in production and jobs. and even as the president touted that economic bright spot, he renewed his case to extend tax cuts for 98% of americans that are due to expire at the end of the year. >> how many of you can afford to pay another $2,200 in taxes? not you? >> no! >> that's a hit you can't afford to take. and by the way, that's not a good hit for businesses either. >> the president's urgent push come as the white house and congress enter the deadline phase in their negotiations to get a deal passed by next friday, the last day congress is in session. president obama and house speaker john boehner know they have to reach agreement this week if there's to be a deal, which is why they met behind closed doors on sunday. spokesmen for both men say that lines of communication remain open with the president reiterating today that he's up for a big deal. >> i have said i will work with republicans on a plan for economic growth, job creation, and reduc

and as someone who served the u.s. in two u.s. administrations, i'm saddened we've reached this point. even before you have decided upon whom to nominate. she's tuck beialking about the conflicts that you placed in the media, she says it's happening politically. >> i think she's right and i'm not going to sit here and say which comes first, but there is advocacy journalism or media -- jumpism is n journalism is not the right word. i think potentially overly reactive to it and that has consequences like what we saw i think with susan rice. >> chuck, thanks so much. john alter is here with me, including professor michael eric dyson and ari melber. john, she was bullied, wasn't she? >> she was bullied, but we shouldn't pretend that just because this was, you know, an irresponsible level of opposition that it's somehow unprecedented in american history. there are many examples going back over many administrations of nominees, sometimes after the point at which the president has named them, who for whatever reason were not politically acceptable to the u.s. senate, and they do constitutionally h

in the house tonight, and according to his sources, the u.s. will go over the fiscal cliff. what's your reaction to that? have you heard that -- >> we can confirm that. >> i love john harwood, but luke and i have been reporting the same thing, jonathan, so there. >> okay. so we're going over the cliff? >> apparently. that's the bad news. the good news is, the parameters of a deal are definitely there. as you described, jonathan, the sticking point remains this so-called trigger, the sequester. remember, they agreed upon it last summer in july and august of 2011 when they came to that big debt ceiling deal. if there were no decision on how to cut government spending by now, these draconian cuts, indiscriminate across the board to defense half of it, $500 billion in domestic programs, the other half of it, the other $500 billion would go into effect. and now some want to have that delayed. they want to have it put off. the house of representatives, the leadership there is saying absolutely no way. there are ironies that abound all along here in these negotiations, and a lot of what you se

to gibe at some point on its theory of law. i think a couple days the u.s. attorney in washington said the federal law trumps what you guys are going. people are going to say no, enough. and the obama administration just started ramping up prosecutions of this. this is unusual for me. >> yeah. do you agree, goldie? >> i do, except heroin is making a comeback and that's really unfortunate. but do i think the legalization of marijuana will increase its usage, i don't. people who want to partake, are already partaking. so i think that we ought to just remove the gloves, let people do what they want to do in the privacy of their own homes. free up our police to direct their things to things that are much more important. these people aren't going to get in the car and drive. hell, they can't even kind their far keys after a good joint. so the issue really is about criminalizing things and making a pathway for our young boys, chiefly boys, from the high school straight to prison. that pipeline is as straight as it's ever been. >> krystal, another change versus just a few years ago, same-sex

the theory is one day the north careens could conduct a missile that could reach as far as the u.s. mainland and potentially loaded with a nuclear device. for the latest on this and civil war in syria, we're joined bidet that -- bidet that milbank. ambassador, we're told north korea has as many as a few dozen nuclear warheads. jay carney the president's spokesperson said that the president is concerned about north korea's behavior, but what do we do to make sure they don't create a missile that could potentially hit the u.s. mainland? >> that, martin, is the $64,000 question. because this is the most successful launch of what essentially a disguised ballistic missile test. the north koreans have never been able to achieve this type of success in sne past. it's an indication of how close they are to construct a missile capable of what you just said of reaching the west coast. and the best we have so far in terms of an arsenal of options is another u.n. security council resolution to impose even yet additional sanctions on north korea that all depends on how china reacts to that. and number tw

, but there's also sort of a trend here that i think it's 6 of the 12 worst mass shootings in u.s. history have happened since 2007. so there's this growing awareness of, wow, this is reaching like, you know, serious proportions right now, and if you think -- >> but, steve, but steve, so we're happy to have mull. shootings in a city like chicago, multiple shootings in atlanta, but it takes an absolute massacre for us to respond? >> yeah. >> is that what you're saying? >> it's unfortunate. i think the parallel, the last time there was serious gun control movement in this country was the early 1990s with the brady bill. what the impetus was was soaring crime rates. that was a top national issue if you took a poll. what you're talking about in chicago and wherever it's playing out, it is horrible, but from a public opinion standpoint, because the violent crime rate has dropped, it took guns in a lot of ways out of the public debate. so now it's these spectacular individual incidents and the growing number of them that's putting it back in the debate and i think creating that pressure again th

at the u.s. capitol. here is the scene live on the west front lawn where the magnificent united states air force band is providing the musical accompaniment. it is a most welcome christmas tradition and we hope he enjoys it because there's been very precious little christmas cheer for speaker boehner over the last 224 hou4 hours. last night he had to remove four republicans from house committee positions. although they say they're just sticking to their conservative principles. earlier today senator jim demint issued a statement via his website hammering the speaker's counteroffer to the president as they tried to avoid a fiscal cliff crisis at the end of this year. quote, speaker boehner's $800 billion tax hike will destroy american jobs. this is why republicans must oppose tax increases. but both senator demint and those four ousted congressmen, excuse me, i'm going to have to take a drink. i'm so sorry. and those ousted congressmen should reconsider their kris simples of speaker boehner because while his plan does not raise taxes on the rich, it does contain at least three evil spirits

ridiculously lax the u.s. laws are and how relatively easy it is to get things like assault weapons and 50 millimeter rifles that can blow a foot away of concrete from a quarter of a mile away. the amount of loopholes that are in the laws right now make me wince a little bit when people say we should be very cautious and very specific about how we want to go. just consider some basic things. i mean, a terrorist can go into a gun show today and buy -- or any other unlicensed dealer and get assault weapons and get extended magazine clips. that's just a simple place where one could start to close down just kind of basic gaping loopholes. if you look at the data on concealed weapons and the problems that concealed weapons are creating in states that have concealed weapons laws, if you look at basic things like the justice department that's wanted to use microstamping to help trace laws, there's at least -- to trace gun crimes, there's at least a half a dozen to three-quarters of a dozen major things we could do that would at least reduce the incidents of these kinds of massive tragedies but i
